What is a Family Therapist, and what does a Family Therapist do?
Family Therapists are highly trained to recognize a family’s patterns of behavioral influences on an individual. They may meet with the individual one-on-one, or with the family as a group. Family therapy is generally brief, solution-focused, and effective. Family Therapists have a Master’s or Doctorate in marriage and family therapy, and at least 2 years of supervised clinical experience before they can see patients at their own private practice. In addition, many Family Therapists also perform marriage counseling as well as individual therapy.
How can I choose the right Family Therapist?
A few questions to ask which will assist you in choosing the right Family Therapist are: What is their education and training background? Have they helped people with similar issues before? Where will my sessions be held? How long is a session? All of these questions can help you get a better picture of the therapist, and can help you decide whether you should book an appointment.
How can I pay for their services?
Typically, larger insurance companies will cover some counseling services. You should always check with your insurer to be certain. Many Family Therapists use a “sliding scale” to determine charges based on income, be sure to ask your therapist how they will be charging you and what forms of payment they accept before starting any treatments.
